หาดป่าตอง อยู่ห่างจากตัวเมืองภูเก็ตไปทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ 15 กิโลเมตร นับว่าเป็นหาดที่มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุดของภูเก็ต เป็นชายหาดที่เพียบพร้อมด้วยสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวก เช่น โรงแรม ร้านอาหาร ร้านดำน้ำ ร้านขายอุปกรณ์กีฬาทางน้ำ และอื่น ๆ อีกมากมาย ไว้คอยบริการแก่นักท่องเที่ยว ด้วยชายหาดที่มีความยาวกว่า 4 กิโลเมตร และสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่ครบครัน ป่าตองจึงเป็นหาดที่มีผู้นิยมมาเยือนมากที่สุด
หาดป่าตองถูกถล่มโดยคลื่นสึนามิในเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวในมหาสมุทรอินเดีย เมื่อวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2547ปัจจุบันหาดป่าตองเป็นหนึ่งในชายหาดสำคัญที่ได้รับการติดตั้งระบบเตือนภัยสึนามิ มีการซักซ้อมการอพยพและการช่วยเหลือนักท่องเที่ยวอยู่อย่างสม่ำเสมอ เป็นระยะๆ
